Caltagirone city

The city has been long famous for its local production of pottery, particularly maiolica and terra-cotta wares. The main landmark in town is the impressive Scala di Santa Maria del Monte, an exceptional staircase of 142 steps, connecting the old city at the top to the new at the bottom. The risers of each step are uniquely painted majolica tiles, and no two have the same design. Visit the regional ceramic museum, 2.500 finds telling about the history of ceramic from the IV century a.C. until today. Also, enjoy a walk in the nice public garden.
