Sicily: a captivating blend of history and nature
Thousands of years of invasion and cultural integration have made Sicily a breath taking collage of European and Mediterranean civilizations. The evidence is in the land, the architecture, the language and cuisine, the religion and the traditions. All of Sicily is an open air museum. As you wander through its cities, villages, farms, beaches and ruins, you'll find yourself in Ancient Greece one moment, North Africa the next. Or perhaps Renaissance Italy, or the Roman Empire. The people here are proud and friendly, as conscious of their past as they are of the present. The Sicilian dialect itself still bears traces of Spanish, French and Greek. Be prepared to taste your way through history as well, from the richest antipasti, indigenous varieties of pasta, cous cous, fresh fish and remarkably good sausages, strong local cheese, amazing pastries, and the best fruit and vegetables, which you can sometimes pick yourself on the public land. Sicily has made the best out of its native vines too. Try both the red and the white (Nero d’Avola, Eloro, Etna, Sambuca di Sicilia, Bianco d'Alcamo, Malvasia delle Lipari, Moscato), as well as the sweet wines (Marsala, Moscato, Passito di Pantelleria, Zibibbo) and the local liqueurs. For those who really love wine, a visit to a local winery is a must. The island's beauty is astounding. It is a land of mountains, vineyards, olive groves and forests. Climb Europe's greatest active volcano, or enjoy the sun-soaked beaches. Explore ancient temples by day, and indulge in the most extraordinary meals in the evening. Whatever your preference, Sicily is an inexhaustible source of delight and wonder. Mediterranean sunshine, beautiful nature, a fascinating culture, ancient traditions. Come and immerse yourself in a world that will thrill your senses and captivate your imagination.
"Once a friend asked me which ist the best time to visit Sicily:
…what a question!! Sicily is always an explosion of colours.
In the spring time? You would miss the prickly pears in August and the bougainvillea in July…
in summer to go to the beach? You would miss the persimmons in october and the yellow brooms in June...
in September to enjoy the sunsets and the sparkling seaside? You would miss Noto's flower parade in May or Mount Etna covered with snow in Winter...
That's why once you visit Sicily you want to come back!"
